Max Turns 2 Months!

So, the past week has been full of lots of fun and not-so-fun things! Read on to find out what my little family has been up to this week!

On Saturday, we went to see my mom. She's leaving to go on a cruise tomorrow and we wanted to say "Hi" before she left. But, everyone at her house was a little preoccupied with their yard sale (including my step-brother Forrest, who saw Max for the first time ever that day) and there were too many bees flying around her front porch, so we didn't really see them for very long before we had to go.

My dad had invited us to dinner at his house later that night, so we went there that evening. Max was being alert a smiley while we were there and he even got some tummy time in.

On Sunday, we unexpectedly got a phone call from my grandma inviting us to lunch at her house. So, we went to visit them and eat that day. Ryan's youngest brother, Josh, left for Idaho that day, too, for school. We didn't get to see him before he left but hope that he is enjoying his time up there and that he has a good semester!

Max was impatient waiting a whole thirty seconds for his bottle at his great-grandma's house and scratched off his scab from Friday's impatience... So he got a Spiderman Band-Aid.

Close up!

Monday was Labor Day. Ryan had the day off so we went to get the car aligned, get an oil change, and get new tires since we're selling it. We went to the Sears Auto Center at Provo Towne Centre Mall. The guy told us it would only take two hours for them to get everything done, so we went to the mall to kill some time. We ran into my mom, Russ, and Quin at the mall just in time for Max to be hungry, so we chatted with them in the food court for a minute. They told us Amanda was working so we stopped in to see her at her store. When we were done at the mall, we went back to see if our car was done, and it definitely wasn't. That two hours wound up taking four and a half hours. I was pretty cranky by the end of the day...

Tuesday, Max rolled twice. I already reported this in my last post and put up a video! But I was very excited about it. I e-mailed the video to Ryan while he was in class and he said he loved it and couldn't stop laughing while he was watching it.

On Wednesday, Max rolled again for me for the fourth time ever! That evening someone knocked on our door. I apparently have visiting teachers... They brought me some candy and Max was such a show off while they were in our doorway--he would not stop smiling. Brat... HaHa, just kidding. I'm not exactly thrilled to have visiting teachers, but I felt too awkward to tell them I don't believe in their church and that I don't consider myself a member anymore, so now I'm not sure what to do when they come over again...

Gavin doesn't get to sleep in our room anymore, so he's claimed the couch...

Max getting hungry...

Yesterday Max turned two months old! He is growing up so fast--I can't believe it! To "celebrate," Max had a doctor appointment. Our big boy weighed 12 pounds, 10 ounces (74.45 percentile), was 23.63 inches tall (77.06 percentile), and his head circumference was 15.2 inches (20.8 percentile). Dr. Gibson had to remeasure Max's head circumference because the nurse originally measured 14.75 inches (7.24 percentile), but last time Max measured 14 inches (20.76 percentile) so the doctor thought that something seemed off.

The nurse mentioned that Max seemed to be breathing too hard, so Dr. Gibson checked his lungs and said he seemed just fine. Max breathes hard and raspy a lot of the time, but I think it's more because he gets excited looking around him and seeing new things. His breathing is completely different when he's asleep or not anxiously looking around. He's really calm when he's awake in our room, and I think it's because he's so familiar with it.

I asked the doctor about Max looking to his left all the time and how it's affecting the shape of his head, and he seemed really concerned when he took a look at our baby's misshapen head. He said that not only can his head become permanently misshapen, but if he's favoring the left side it can affect his jaw and cause problems with that later on. He also noticed that when laying flat on his back, Max has some body torsion, where he torques to his left. So we've been instructed to do some neck stretches with Max 4-5 times a day to help correct these problems (which Max HATES--his neck muscles are really tight and he doesn't like being restrained). He is also no longer allowed to sleep on his back--we have to prop him up so he's on an angle facing his right (which we did last night--Max is so funny, though; he tries to look to his left even though he's angled towards his right and his head just flops to the right when he finally relaxes). Dr. Gibson did seem pretty impressed by how strong Max's neck muscles are (just because they're strong does not mean you shouldn't support his head when holding and carrying him). He set Max on his belly and went to raise Max's head, but Max started lifting it before the doctor had a chance. Then Max almost rolled into the wall...

When the doctor looked at Max's genitals, he pointed out that Max may has either a hydrocele or an inguinal hernia. He was really concerned about this, too, and grabbed a second doctor to get a second opinion. They both seemed concerned about it and gave us a referral to see Dr. Earl Downey, a pediatric surgeon. Ryan and I weren't really told much about it, so I did some research online at home and looked up the term in my baby book. Apparently, a hydrocele is extra fluid in the scrotal sac and it can cause the loss of blood flow to the testicles. My book said that usually hydroceles and hernias go away within the first year of life, so I'm not sure why the doctor was as concerned as he was. I guess maybe Max's just looks worse than most. I'm worried about him having to have surgery. I hope that when we see the surgeon he thinks it doesn't look so bad and that it will go away by itself. I tried to make an appointment with Dr. Downey when we left, but I got their voicemail and left a message.

Finally, after all this was done, the doctor left and sent in a nurse to give Max his vaccines... Poor baby boy! First, Max got his rotavirus vaccine. This was an oral vaccine and he didn't seem to mind swallowing it. Next came the shots... He got a hepatitis B vaccine, a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), and a Diptheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis vaccine (DTaP). The nurse had Ryan and me hold Max's shoulders down while she stabilized his legs. She stuck him in his right leg with one needle. I don't think it hurt him very much, but it definitely surprised him. His eyes went wide and his raspy breathing stopped for a moment. But when the nurse plunged in the meds, Max went bright red and let out one really long, loud scream. During that scream the nurse got the other two shots in his left leg. He cried non-stop after that, and Mommy cried with him. I couldn't put him down until he calmed a little bit, and then we had to dress him. He'd been hungry during the appointment so we gave him a couple ounces to eat before we left, which also helped him calm down a little.

When we got home, Ryan had to go straight to class. I couldn't put Max down. Every time I tried, he just bawled. So I held him all night and had to ask Ryan to bring dinner home. We let Max sleep with us in our room last night, partly because it was such a traumatizing day for him and partly because I wanted to be able to check him for a fever or other complications from the vaccines more easily during the night.

Max getting ready for his big appointment... I love his facial expressions!

He no longer sits still in the tub. He kicks his legs and moves his arms and gets water all over the place. I think he thinks it's funny... I'm worried about what will come of this as he gets older and realizes what he's doing!

Max in his bathrobe!

All cleaned up before his doctor appointment!

Poor little Max on his way home from the doctor's office...

Today, Max seems to be feeling better. He definitely does not like his neck stretches, but if I let him snuggle with me after we're done, he calms down fast and is much happier.

I called the surgeon's number again today a few times and it went straight to voicemail every time. I left another message, but no one ever did get back to me. So I called our pediatrician's office to see if I had been given the correct number. The receptionist gave me a different number to try, which was disconnected. So I called the pediatrician's office again and they gave me another number. I almost had an appointment set when the receptionist realized I was wanting to make the appointment for the Provo office, so she told me to call the first number I'd been calling. I explained to her that my calls from that office weren't being answered and that my messages were not being returned, so she called someone at their office and found out for me that there is only one person in the Provo office who handles scheduling and that she was on vacation. How stupid is that, right? So she told me I could either schedule with her for the Salt Lake office or I could wait until Monday and hope that the other woman was back from her vacation. So I scheduled to go to Salt Lake. Max's appointment is Tuesday, September 28. I'm not sure if I want to drive that far with Max, but I'm also not sure I want to schedule with the Provo office--they haven't made a good first impression on me... We'll see if the woman in Provo calls me on Monday and if they have any earlier appointments. If they do, I may reschedule...

Poor Max got two shots in his left leg!

The nurse stuck him in the right leg first.

Those were long needles! Made the poor little guy bleed...;

Two spots...

One spot...

Thinking about what Mama's saying...

:-D

Look at that smirk... LOL!

He's a cute lil' smiler!

His poor, odd-shaped head!

This is how Max had to sleep all night...

Hope everyone is doing well and has a great weekend!

P.S. This is the last time I'm signing my name... I don't think Ryan is ever going to post anything on here, so unless a post specifies that someone else is posting, you can just assume it's me. :-P

MAX ROLLS OVER!!

Mama proudly presents Max rolling over, now on video!!

This was his third time rolling over and I am so glad I finally got it on video!! His first time was September 1, 2010 and his second time was earlier today on September 7, 2010. I am so proud of my little guy!!

Unfortunately the video on here is a little stretched and I don't know how to fix it, but it's still really cool, anyway. If you have Facebook, it looks a little better on there!

Anyhow, I have skipped much and will write more later. I was just super excited about this and wanted to post it for the world to see!

Best Thing Ever!

So, Max ate at 9:00 last night and went to bed at 11:00, which meant he would wake up at 3:00 this morning, not eat very much, and eat again at 6:00 this morning. Everything went according to schedule, except he actually slept until about 6:45 this morning. After I was done feeding him, I went to pour myself what was left of the coffee Ryan had made for his drive to school. After that, I went upstairs and got online for a bit. As soon as I was done playing around on Facebook, I decided it was time to hop in the shower.

As soon as I'd made that decision, Max started fussing. Irritated that he always picks the most inconvenient times for me to be fussy, I went into his room to check on him. As soon as he saw me peek over the crib at him, he stopped fussing and got the hugest smile ever on his face! My heart melted instantly and I was immediately no longer irritated. I scooped him up to hold him and he just kept smiling at me.

I love being a mom. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Moments like this will stay in my heart forever! This little boy and his Daddy are my whole wide world!!

Max Smiles & Rolls!!

On Tuesday, August 31, I worked on getting Max to smile all day, because he looked like he was curious to try it out. He's smiled in the past here and there, but he's never smiled directly at us or for us... Until that day!! I didn't get the best footage of his smile and it's definitely not the biggest smile he's pulled for us, but he kind of does it here, anyway. Enjoy! We sure did!!

So cute!! I love him so much and he is getting more and more fun every day!!

In fact, the very next day, which was Wednesday, September 1, he rolled from his belly to his back for the first time ever! He rolled over his left shoulder. It was amazing! I was so proud!! I think it was just one of those one-time kind of things, though, because he hasn't done it again since. We have been working on it, though! He's been pretty close a couple of times.

He has been so funny lately. And I think he's favoring his left so far--he is always looking to his left (hence his odd-shaped head--he only looks to his right when I put him on my left side and do something interesting enough to hold his attention), he likes to rotate himself and he always pushes with his left foot so he goes in a counter-clockwise circle. I'm interested to see if he's going to be right-handed or left-handed now!

Oh, also on Tuesday, we attended The Colonies Summer Party (a party for our townhome neighbors). The only neighbor we really know still is Kathy. So she tried to introduce us to a few people, but it mostly just felt awkward. The event felt more like a church social than it did a neighborhood party. Everyone was calling each other "sister," "brother," and "bishop." Which is fine--we don't have a problem with the church or anything, we just don't really feel like we fit in. We stayed for 45 minutes, anyway, then Max was hungry so we went back in to feed him.

:-) Anyway, that's all there is to report for now, so here are a few new pictures.

Yes!! Momma got him to face his right!

Shampoo!

You can see how his head bulges a little more on the right because he lays facing his left...

See how odd-shaped it's getting?!

All cleaned up!

This was right after he rolled. See how perfectly positioned he is to do it again?! But he didn't. :-(

I wake up to this every morning now. When I put him to sleep, you wouldn't be able to see his head in this picture because it would be right about where the lion is. But by morning, he has unwrapped himself and is at the top of the bed on his right side (again, like he's pushed with his left foot)...

The little guy, sleepin' by Mom!

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Some Firsts...

So, yet again, I am way behind on the blog... Surprise, surprise, yeah? :-/

Okay, so my last update (excluding the one about me quitting my job at Walgreens) was on Friday, August 20. I got a text message from my friend from work, Amber, that day. She found out that she was pregnant shortly after I did--we were three weeks apart. During my pregnancy, I found it fun to have someone to talk to who was going through all the same things as I was. Anyway, she texted me to inform me that she was finally in the hospital to have her baby! She was in labor all night. On Saturday, August 21, 2010, she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl! Her name is Cameron. She was 7 pounds, 14 ounces--only 1 pound, 3 ounces less than Max!

Our other friend from work, Noemi, wanted to go with Ryan and I to see Amber, Ty (Amber's husband), and Cameron. Ryan got home from inventory later than expected and it took us longer to get there than we'd planned, though, so we just met her in their room. Their baby is so cute! Congratulations, Ty and Amber! And welcome to the world, Cameron!

On Sunday the 22nd, my Dad invited us over for dinner. So we went over to visit them and eat. My dad has the worst luck with bees... He got stung riding his motorcycle! So he wasn't sure if his throat hurt because of the sting or if he was sick so he didn't hold Max while we were there. :-(

Taking a nap!

Max in his little hat! He doesn't like his hats very much yet!

When we got home that night, it was time to make Max sleep in his own room for the first time ever... It was a hard night! For me, anyway. We put Max in bed around 9:00 and he cried until 11:00. I did my share of crying during that time, too, and I snapped at Ryan more than I should have. He was trying to console me but I was just so upset that my baby was crying! At 11, we figured it was time for him to eat again. So I fed him and put him back in his crib. Then he fell asleep just fine!

We got Max's room all cleaned up before we let him sleep in there. He now has the nicest room in the house!

Max's closet!

The changing area--we keep extra diapers and wipes in the toy box right now, because he doesn't have very many toys yet!

The door! Max's diapers and swing...

The crib!

Mommy and Daddy's chairs!

A couple of Max's stuffed animals! They hang out in the crib when Max isn't in it!

Ready for a diaper change!

Daddy reading Max a bedtime story!

He is sleeping better and better every night. As long as we don't put him in his room before he eats at 11 or 12, he will fall asleep pretty quickly and sleep pretty well through the night. He's gone from five hours of sleep at a time to six hours, and last night I gave him an extra ounce of formula and he went seven hours between feeding times! Though if he goes over six it still makes me nervous...

Here are some pictures from Monday and Tuesday. There's nothing to report for these days because nothing especially interesting was going on...

Bear butt!

What a cutie!

I put one of Max's sleep and plays on him for bed... Apparently he has outgrown this one!

Wednesday was of course the day I quit my job at Walgreens. My boss didn't seem surprised--I think he figured my decision could go a couple of different ways. Max and I visited Daddy at work that day, too, and we went to give my friend Amber the Enfamil we decided not to use.

Speaking of Enfamil... That was a bad idea. It seemed really good at first, but Max kept throwing it all up and it completely changed his poop--it was much more solid on the Enfamil. So we decided to switch back to Similac. We've had quite the week in regards to Max's bowel movements...

Anyway, Ryan started school on Wednesday. I of course had to get a picture of him on his first day of school... He wasn't very happy about that, HaHa!

Daddy picked out this outfit for Max!

On Thursday, we were invited to Seven Peaks by Security Home Mortgage, which is the company Ryan and I got our mortgage through originally. Ryan couldn't go because he had class, but I decided to take Max and meet my mom and her husband there. I misplaced my camera so I didn't get any pictures, but Max and I hung out and talked to my mom and Russ for a couple hours. We didn't do any swimming! We had some drinks and nachos, and then Max and I left so we could go home and make dinner.

On Friday morning, I found Max had gotten his foot out of his pajamas... Granted they are a little big on him still, but I think he's going to one smart little dude...

Also on Friday, Ryan got out of work early to do something with his youngest brother, Josh. Josh is going to BYU-Idaho and starts school next week so we're not going to get so see him a whole lot. Ryan and Josh wanted to go bungee jumping before Josh left, but they couldn't find anywhere in Utah that does it anymore. So they went to the Gateway Mall and ate chocolate covered crickets and grasshoppers, and they indulged in cookies... This would probably be better for Ryan to write about since I wasn't there, but he's not one for blogging, really... But, I guess they had fun, anyway!

On Saturday Ryan had school again in the morning. I cut Max's fingernails for the first time ever. It's not as scary as I thought it was going to be. What's hard is when it's not your own nails you're cutting, you can't feel if you have skin between the clippers or not. So you have to look really closely before you snip! He did good, though! No blood! No tears! When Ryan got home from school, we headed to his mom's house. She wanted to do a family picture and one last dinner with the whole family for Josh before he left for school, so I got to organize the photo and then we ate. Poor Max had a couple accidents. We had poop go up his back for the first time ever... :-(

Ryan had more fun imitating Max that night and made me get in on it, too... ;-)

On Sunday, we went to visit my grandparents and my Uncle Hal. After that, we went home and Ry tried to get our hot tub cleaned out so we can start using it again. We both could use some more relaxation some days!

Max is smiling a lot more. We're still trying to get him to smile back at us when we smile at him. I think he's getting close! He is starting to make new sounds, too. It sounded like he said "Hi" on Saturday night, but obviously we can't count it as a first word yet! Just a sound he made that sounded like a word. He also is pretty funny sometimes when he loses his binky. It falls out of his mouth and he'll turn his towards the binky and try to suck on it!

Anyway, I've got lots to do today and have been pretty lazy so far, so I'd better go!

Hope everyone is doing well!

-Aubrey
